Chairman,
Select Committee on European Legislation,
House of Commons
I enclose explanatory memoranda concerning two proposals for European Community trade and cooperation agreements with
Macao and the Federative Republic of Brazil.
The
You will note that the Presidency intend to conclude the
agreements at the next Foreign Affairs Council (15 June). I
hope that the Committee will reconvene in time to consider
these proposals, but in the event that it does not I trust
that you can agree that the UK need not delay the conclusion
of the agreements by placing a scrutiny reserve on them.
Presidency attaches great importance to concluding both agreements at the last Foreign Affairs Council under its
chairmanship. Both proposals are along the lines of existing
EC agreements and I intend therefore to agree to them at that
meeting.
I am copying this letter to the Leader of the House of Lords,
the Secretary to the Cabinet, and the Clerk to your
Committee.
