Re-employed staff An ollicer who has retired and been re-employed in a lower grade may be considered for an award appropriate to his re-employed grade only.
CMG - A very small number of CMGs may be awarded on the PM's list to members of the Home Civil Service. Candidates should nor merely have been concerned at their desks in the UK with overseas allairs, but should have spent a considerable continuous period of residence overseas.
ISO - Appointment to the Imperial Service Order is confined to Grade 5 officers in the Diplomatic Service and equivalent grades in the Home Civil Service. The standard period for qualification is 25 years' established service, but the ISO is no less selective an honour for meritorious service than the OBE, next to which it ranks in the Order of Wear. A candidate who fails narrowly in the selection for the OBE will therefore normally be considered automatically for the alternative of an ISO if he has the necessary qualifying service.
BEM - As a general rule, candidates for the BEM will normally be expected to have at least 20 years service. It is a highly competitive honour and the candidate should have performed duties superior to his ordinary work, or performed that ordinary work in a highly meritorious manner. Something more than faithful service is required. Exceptions to these strict requirements may sometimes be possible if there has been duty or service of a dangerous or particularly trying nature. The Modal may not be awarded to persons eligible for appointment to a Class of the Order of the British Empire le MBE and above.
