Geoffray Maitland Smith was born in 1933 and educated at University College School London. He qualified as a chartered accountant in 1956. Mr Maitland Smith practised with Thorton Baker & Co (now Grant Thornton) until 1971 when he joined Sears plc as Executive Director, becoming Chief Executive in 1978 and
Chairman in 1985.
He is also a non-executive director of Asprey plc and The Hammarson Property Investment and Development Corporation plc.
