16th June 1992
Thank you for your letter of 1st June 1992 in response to my earlier letter. It was a pleasure seeing and talking to you again though briefly at the Dragon Boat Dinner on 11th June 1992.
It had always been a most enjoyable and important event for the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.
I am glad to have your assurance that a smooth and sustainable transition of sovereignty is an important objective. For your advance information, in our Monthly Economic Review to be released at the end of June,
we
are projecting for 1992 Hong Kong will have a GDP growth of 5.5% up from an earlier forecast of 4.7%. For 1993 we expect it to be even better, probably 7%. Our optimism is based on further growth expected in economic activities between China and Hong Kong in the years to come either as a source or destination for us. Much of course will depend on there being no problem of MFN for China. The banks' clients seem to step up some increase in exports to U.S.A. in recent months. Reyàíûs,
Zo
