Please refer to your letter of 17 July, which we subsequently discussed on the telephone.

I am now able to tell you that it has been agreed that I can take part in the Hong Kong Freedom Association's proposed panel discussion, as outlined in your letter. Such participation will, of course, be in a personal capacity. You may care to note that by the time the panel discussion takes place, I will have temporarily left the FCO and will be a Research Associate at the International Institute of Strategic Studies. It might be best to use that title, rather than my FCO position in any publicity.

I believe you said that the date and venue might change from that set out in your letter. Perhaps you could let me know the new details in due course. Since I will be at IISS from 1 October, it would be best if you sent these to my home address - 86 Crescent Lane, London SW4 9PL, tel/fax 071-498-1489. there is also an answerphone if nobody is in.

On an entirely different subject, I was amused to receive this morning the minutes of the BAKS committee meeting on 10 July, which noted my absence. Since today's communication was the first I had heard of a committee meeting, and indeed, the first time I aware that I was expected (?invited) to attend, you will forgive my surprise.
