Crimes Involving Juveniles and Young Persons

There were 601 juvenile offenders aged under 16 arrested for crime in January 1992, compared with 574 in the preceding month and the monthly average of 567 for the previous 12 months.

The total number of juvenile crimes (i.e. crimes committed without the involvement of persons other than juveniles) in January was 373 compared with 345 in December 1991. Of the total juvenile crimes which occurred in January, 117 were shopthefts, 73 miscellaneous thefts, 40

robberies and 39 unlawful society offences.

The total number of young offenders (i.e. aged between 16 and 20 years) arrested in January was 683 persons, compared with 698 in December and the monthly average of 652 for the previous 12 months.

474 crimes were known to have been committed by young persons in

January, compared with 482 in December. Of these, 76 were miscellaneous thefts, 51 shopthefts, 46 unlawful society offences, 24 woundings and

serious assaults and 22 robberies.

Vietnames Refugees/Boat People Arrested

There were 165 Vietnamese migrants (VMs) arrested for crime in January, compared with 154 in December and 114 in the same period in 1991. The total number of crimes involving VMs in January was 162, compared with 142 cases in the previous month and 153 in the corresponding period in

1991.

During the month, 40 Vietnamese people were arrested for shoptheft (31 cases), 17 for wounding and serious assault (22 cases) and 26 for forgery of identity document (20 cases).

Narcotics

22.

The anti-narcotics enforcement action in January resulted in

total provisional seizures of 11.2 kilograms of heroin and 2.2 kilograms

of cannabis.
