The number of robberies involving firearms or pistol like objects

was 61, an increase of 21 over December 1991. The monthly

average for the previous twelve months was 46. Four of the cases in

January 1992 were confirmed as involving genuine firearms, the same figure

December. The monthly average for the previous twelve months was

There were 4 goldsmith/watch shop robberies (3 successful) in

January, compared with 11 in December and the monthly average of 13 for the

previous 12-month period. In total, jewellery and watches valued at

HK$11.6 million were stolen.

Seven bank robberies (3 successful) occurred with HK$39,210

stolen during the month, compared wtih 12 in December and the monthly

average of 12 for the preceding twelve months.

Burglary

8.

The total number of burglaries in January 1992 was 1 267,

representing 40.9 cases a day, a rise of 1.8% over the preceding month and

in increase of 10.2% compared with January in 1991. Compared with the

monthly average for the previous 12 months, it was 9.9% higher.

Homicide

9.

There were 10 homicides recorded during the month, compared with

9 in December and 8 in the same period in 1991. Of the homicides which

occurred in January, 4 resulted from domestic disputes, 1 from insane

action and 1 from gang attack. The motives of the rest are not yet

classified.

Wounding and Serious Assault

10.

There were 467 wounding and serious assault cases in January,

representing 15.1 cases a day, a decrease of 14.2% over December 1991 but

an increase of 9.4% compared wtih the same period in 1991. This daily

average was an 11.5% increase over the monthly average for the previous 12

months.
