BRIEF TO THE EXCO BY COMMISSIONER OF POLICE (JANUARY 1992)

GENERAL SITUATION

1.

There were 7 421 crimes reported to the police in January 1992, compared with 7 535 in December 1991. In terms of daily rate, overall crime decreased by 1.5% to 239.4 cases compared with 243.1 cases recorded in December 1991. Compared with the same period in 1991, the level of

overall crime rose marginally by 0.1%.

There were 1 567 violent crimes# in January 1992, accounting for

This 21.1% of overall crime and representing a daily rate of 50.6 cases.

daily average was a decrease of 7.9% over the preceding month but a rise of 6.5% over the same period in 1991. The decrease was due mainly to a drop in robberies (-88 cases) and woundings and serious assaults (-77 cases). Analysing by selected type of violent crimes, robbery made up 47.5% of total violent crime and wounding and serious assault, 29.8%.

There were 745 robberies in January, representing 24.0 cases This daily average was a drop of 10.6% over December 1991 but a rise of 1.6% over the same month of last year. Compared with the daily average for the previous twelve months, it was 2.3% lower.
