"officer of Class B" means an officer not in receipt of expatria- tion pay who is holding his appointment by approval of a Secretary of State and who satisfies a Secretary of State that he has reason- able grounds for anxiety regarding the future of his career in the public service:

"officer of Class C" means an officer in receipt of expatriation pay who is serving on probation, and includes an officer who is serving on agreement who was recruited to a pensionable post and who in the opinion of the Chief Secretary had a reasonable prospect of appointment to the pensionable establishment;

“officer of Class D” means an officer in receipt of expatriation pay who has been temporarily transferred to the public service in the Federation from other public service and who under the conditions of his service has the right at his option to revert to such other public service and who in the opinion of the Chief Secretary has a reasonable prospect of his temporary transfer to the public service in the Federation being made permanent;

"operative date" means the 1st day of Julv, 1957;

"operative period" means the period of five years immediately subsequent to the operative date;

"pension" includes reduced pension and gratuity;

"qualifying service" means service which, under the appropriate law, may be taken into account in determining whether an officer is eligible for a pension or gratuity;

"retire" means retire from the public service of the Federation otherwise than on transfer to other public service;

"Table A" means the Table A set out in Part II of this Schedule;

(2) Expressions used in this Schedule shall, unless the contrary intention appears, have the same respective meaning as in the Pensions Ordinance, 1951, and any Regulations made thereunder.

(3) For the purposes of this Schedule, the decision of a Secretary of State as to whether or not a person is an entitled officer shall be final.

2. (1) Every cutitled officer shall before the operative date be given, by notice in writing, an opportunity to state whether he wishes-

(a) to continue in the service of the Government after

the operative date; or

(b) to retire on the operative date;

and this option shall be exercised in writing not later than one month after the receipt of such notice, and if an officer does not so exercise such option he shall thereupon be deemed to have elected to continue in the service of the Government.

(2) Not later than two months after the giving of the notice referred to in the preceding sub-paragraph the Government shall notify in writing every officer, other than an officer who has stated that he wishes to retire, whether he will-

(a) continue to be employed in the service of the Govern-

ment and if so for what period; or
