Mr. P. Jones, Publishing Editor, Construction News, 100 Avenue Road, London, NW3 3TP.
Dear Sir,
6th March 1992
Your edition of 5th March carried a lead story about our bid for the Tsing Ma Bridge in Hong Kong.
I should like to make it quite clear that the reporter, Keith Wallis, did some of his not at any stage speak to me, although he attributes information to me. He did speak to the Trafalgar House Public Affairs Department who told him that four bids for the bridge were still on the table and that all four contenders were still in discussion with the Hong Kong Government. I do not know where Mr Wallis got his information about the bids, unless from the press speculation there has been here and in Hong Kong. As far as our bid is concerned, he is entirely wrong to suggest that the price now is different from the price submitted on 16th December 1991.

Mr Wallis is also incorrect in stating that our consortium has been singled
receive special support from the
the British Government. The Department of Trade and Industry is backing our efforts, and we are grateful for this, but no more than is normal when a major overseas contract is involved.
There is also a suggestion in Mr Wallis's article that the British Government is applying pressure to the Hong Kong Government to award contracts to selected British companies.
Your paper may care to seek the reaction to this of the Governments in question. For our part we have found in our dealings with the Hong Kong Government that nationality has had no bearing one way or another on their attitude to us. The British Government has also made it very clear to us that it can have no influence on the Hong Kong Government's decisions in relation to the Tsing Ma Bridge contract.
In view of the inaccuracies and ill judged remarks in Mr Wallis's article I hope you will publish this letter in your next edition.
Yours faithfully,
sxelzlett
