them and this would be handled by a low key routine briefing.

32. Mr Stone then asked whether funding of Gurkha redundancy payments

would be a problem-given the new membership of LEGCO. CBF said that

there would be discussions about what proportion of costs would be met

from within the DCA. GF 1b reported that HKG were saying at present that

they would not meet any of the costs, but discussions would continue.

Both sides would present papers in March, to be followed by discussions in Hong Kong in April and a full meeting in May. On the subject of

helicopters, HKG was going to write a paper in view of the fact that they

shortly had to make a decision whether or not to buy more $76s. HKG were

also asking for figures of what "Stronger for Longer" was going to cost.

MOD would shortly be giving them details and the first indication of the

HKG reaction should be given at the May meeting. There was plenty of

scope for problems and we might find the arguments that HMG had deployed

over the Patrol Craft used against us by the HKG over helicopters.

ITEM 4 UPDATE ON HANDOVER OF GARRISON COMMITMENTS TO RHKP &

OTHER GOVERNMENT AGENCIES

33. ACOS J3 briefed the meeting. The final section of the border would

be handed over to the RHKP on 22 Apr 92. The reserve company commitment would continue until October, undertaken by the Duty Battalion.

34. Helicopter support to the border had been taken on by the RHKAAF.

There had been a number of initial

initial difficulties but these had been

overcome. The RHKAAF still could not provide full SAR facilities, so 28

Sqn would continue with this task until at least April. All support to
