of service in a previous post.

When a Governor proceeds on leave the Officer Administering the Government (who is generally the Deputy Governor, or Chief Secretary) has the option of occupying Government House and usually does so. The Officer Administering the Government has all the powers and privileges of the Governor during the latter's absence on leave, though naturally he would not be expected to initiate any new policy or take any action which he knows to be contrary to the policy of the

Governor.

Interregna between outgoings and incoming Governors should be relatively short and the maximum interregnum normally permissible is two months. Governors should therefore endeavour to avoid accumulating leave.

There may without permission of the Secretary of State. also be specific constitutional provisions relating to absences; these should be followed without exception.

If a Governor is leaving his Territory on official duty for more than a few days the proper officer (who is generally the Deputy Governor, or Chief Secretary) should assume the Government, but if the Governor expects to be away for a few days only he may appoint a Governor's Deputy, as he may do for absence from headquarters but within the Territory.
