Dear John,
DEPENDENT TERRITORIES WORK PERMIT QUOTA
Thank you for your letter IMG/8513/59/1 of 18 March.
I am sorry I have been unable to revert to you sooner about this. As you correctly surmise, it has been necessary to consult St Helena, and this has taken some time. I have just heard from South Atlantic and Antarctic Department (who now deal with the affairs of St Helena). Predictably, the reaction to the prospect of an end of the work permit quota is one of disappointment and concern. SAAD have however asked me for further details of the alternative arrangements (eg enhanced employment training) which the Department of Employment might be able to provide.
It would therefore be most helpful if Bob Niblett (to whom I am copying this letter) could let me have the relevant information. My aim is to put this proposal to Ministers very soon and I will write again as soon as the outcome is known. I hope that you and Bob Niblett will be able to bear with us a little longer.
Yours Sincerely Alan Paul
