Forgive my bothering you with another load of documents time concerning the above proposed Hong Kong conference which
has superseded the aborted Chinese Enterprise about which we corresponded in 1985.
Plans for this new proposal to be held under the joint auspices of the American and Japanese Institutions of Landscape Architects and warmly supported by Sir David Wilson, are progressing well but are desperately needing a British leading international figure to do the honour of being the President of the Honary Advisory Committee - the duties are advisory ones and minimal (the Committee only meets if the President desires!)
Obviously you will need a bit more information some of which is enclosed and if you could find time to see John Calabrini, Chairman of the Steering Committee he could fill you in on any further information you require.
I hope that the distinction of the individual members of this committee, the fact you are, I believe in Hong Kong from time to time anyway, and best of all it isn't until 1993 will soften your heart and that although you must be swamped with similar appeals you will consider it most seriously.
Please help.
Yours sincerely,
Love to you beloved

Landscape Institute. World Congress on Urban Growth and the Environment, Hong Kong, 18th-23rd October 1993
Following our talk on Tuesday with Hugh Clamp, I have spoken again to both him and Derek Lovejoy, the other principal member of our Hong Kong team, and we wonder whether you would be prepared to approach Sir Geoffrey Howe on our behalf, to find out if he would consider paying us the honour of being the President of the Hono- rary Advisory Committee for the Congress in question. A copy of our latest proposal is enclosed for your re- ference.
We desperately need a leading, British international figure to head the above mentioned Committee, as a kind of " figurehead " and certainly no more time would be involved than the occasional consultation, entirely at the President's own convenience, since the Honorary Advisory Committee unlike the Steering Committee in London and the Action Committee in Hong Kong is not expected to convene at any time. As one of our pros- pective Vice-Presidents, yourself, I am sure that you fully approve!
Obviously Sir Geoffrey will need some additional infor- mation before coming to a decision, even assuming that he is prepared to give the matter some thought. With this in mind, I wonder whether it would be possible for me to call on him briefly, quite informally, before a formal approach is made by the Landscape Institute.
Quite apart from our need for the guidance of a leading international figure, it is absolutely vital for the credibility of the entire operation that we succeed in finding a President whose reputation will enhance the truly caring
compassionate image to which you and I have always attached so much importance.
and
I believe that Sir Geoffrey is a close friend of the Hong Kong Governor, Sir David Wilson, whose latest letter is also enclosed.
