SIMON MURRAY

Simon Murray is Group Managing Director of Hutchison Whampoa Limited (HWL), one of Hong Kong's largest and most profitable investment holding companies. Hutchison has interests in property, container terminal operations, telecommunications, the hotel industry, electricity generation and supply, oil and gas, China trade, and retailing.

Mr. Murray holds a number of directorships in Hong Kong publicly listed companies and is Chairman of Hutchison's subsidiary Cavendish International Holdings Limited and associated company, Hongkong Electric Holdings Limited, which supplies Hong Kong island with electricity. is also co-chairman of Husky Oil Ltd., Canada's largest independent integrated oil and gas company, in which Hutchison has a substantial interest.

Prior to joining Hutchison, Mr Murray was Managing Director of his own company, Davenham Investments Limited an engineering consultancy firm representing and advising major international companies with interests in the Far East.

Mr. Murray first arrived in Hong Kong in 1966 to join Jardine Matheson and was sent by the company to Thailand for three years to run its building and contracting division. During his 14 years with Jardines, Mr. Murray held executive directorships in a variety of companies in Hong Kong including Gammon, Jardine Engineering Hongkong Aircraft Engineering Corporation (Swire Group) Dunhill Far East and some additional 20 companies owned wholly or in part by Jardines. From 1973 to 1975, Mr. Murray was based in London as a Director of Matheson & Co and was responsible for trading operations in Europe and Liaison with the Far East institutions. In 1979, he attended the Senior Executive Programme of Standford Business School in the US. Mr. Murray left Jardines in 1980 to set up Davenhanm.

Mr. Murray, as Chairman of Honour Hong Kong a group of businesses and professionals formed to help maintain confidence in Hong Kong and ensure its continued prosperity, has been involved in a number of non-business activities in support of Hong Kong's future.

The the early sixties prior to coming to Hong Kong, Mr. Mrurray spent five years with the French Foreign Legion in Algeria. He subsequently wrote a book on his experience in the Legion. The book "The Legionnaire" has become a best seller with sales exceeding half a million copies, and has been published in several languages including English, French and Japanese.

Mr. Murray is 50 years old, married with three childres and speaks four languages including French, German and Thai.
