YOUR TELNO 1599 AND HONG KONG TELNO 2934: VISIT BY LORD

CAITHNESS

1. Lord Caithness was grateful for your advice and for the Governor's confirmation that a short visit at the outset of his trip would be manageable.

2. On this basis Lord Caithness would plan to spend 25 and half of 26 November in Hong Kong before flying as you recommend to Peking. He does however attach importance to seeing something of Guangdong. He would therefore plan to return that way and fly home from Kaitak. (Literally only in transit he does not wish

to interrupt the Governor's programme with the Duke and Duchess of Kent).

3. Since Xinjiang would not be en route either inward or outward, he would prefer to omit any visit there, in view of the extensive travelling time involved.
