ANGLO-JAPANESE WEEKEND NEAR AVIGNON ON 19-21 JULY

Issue

You may wish to have a brief account of this meeting which was attended by a group of politicians, diplomats and businessmen from Britain and Japan. The purpose of the meeting, which is the third in the series, is to have frank and open discussion of major issues affecting both countries and to develop closer personal links between the participants, particularly on the business front (see list attached).

Recommendation

2.

For information only. You may however be interested in attending a future meeting.

Background

3. These meetings are small and intimate and flow from an initiative developed by Michael Dobbs-Higginson, until recently Chairman of Merrill Lynch Asia based in Hong Kong. The setting in his Chateau near Avignon is superb and he finances the whole event. He is a personal friend and I have supported him in his efforts. The FCO contribution has also been invaluable.

4.

These meetings have proved strikingly successful in terms of the frankness, friendliness and quality of the discussions. David Howell has been a lively participant in each of them. It is particularly encouraging that the Japanese side, who have to make the longest journey, are very keen to maintain these meetings.
