Thank you very much for your letter of 13 August enclosing an extract from your Prime Minister's speech on "Japan-China Relations in a New World". Your colleague, Mr Kojima, had in fact kindly forwarded a copy of the complete text of this speech to us a few days ago. In particular, I have brought it to the attention of the Acting Governor who has asked me to express his own appreciation.

As I wrote to Mr Kojima, we greatly appreciate the interest and support shown by the Japanese Government for Hong Kong. For your Prime Minister to raise Hong Kong in this helpful fashion is most welcome.
