Chinese/Japanese Relations

1 1992 is 20th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic

relations between Japan and China. Relations not as warm as pre-1989, but Japan took the initiative (be fore the 1990 Houston Summit) in arguing for an unwinding of post-Tiananmen restrictive measures. Japanese aid of 129.6 billion Yen is available to China in 1991 as part of Third yen Loan (1990-94) of 810 billion Yen.

The Japanese Prime Minister, Mr Kaifu visited Peking in August, raising human rights with Chinese (although not as prominently as the Prime Minister in his visit the following month). During his

visit China announced their decision to accede in principle to NPT.
