whether he would wish to impose a time ban longer than the customary thirty years to access to his approved transcript. If no further restrictions are imposed, those transcripts in which the last event discussed occurred more than thirty years ago are then released to scholarly research. The project also encourages research and study into the achievements and problems of Hong Kong and its people, and has resulted in the publication of one book and twelve articles, which are listed under Dr. Tsang's personal entry.

E. Sino-British Summer School of Philosophy

This was established in 1987 to provide a yearly three-week session of intensive philosophical work, taught by leading British philosophers and attended by a selection of the best young philosophy staff members and graduate students in China. The object of the Summer School is to introduce its Members to the main problems, figures, and methods of English-speaking philosophy in this century.

The project was initiated through private discussions between British and Chinese philosophers in 1986. It has attracted funding from the British. Academy, British Council, Ford Foundation, Great Britain-China Centre, Great Britain-China Fellowship Trust, Hong Kong Bank, John Swire and Sons Ltd., and Sino-British Fellowship Trust.

Since its inception, the Summer School has had close informal relations with the Centre.

In each session the Summer School offers courses dealing with major areas of philosophy, individual figures, and philosophical problems. The initial 1988 session on Analytical Philosophy was held at Qinghua University in Beijing. Sessions planned for 1989 on Modern Epistemology and 1990 on the Philosophy of Science were cancelled in response to events in China, but the latter has been rescheduled for 1991. A one week seminar and workshop on the Philosophy of Science and on Thought and Mental Contents replaced the cancelled 1990 session.

In addition to its main activities, the Summer School has organized an information clearing house for visits by philosophers to or from China and offering help in placing Chinese visiting scholars and graduate students in philosophy. It also nominates suitable philosophers for visits. The Summer School is exploring the possibility of preparing a bilingual philosophy dictionary. Summer School lectures are published in translation in order to reach a wider audience in China.
