Department regularly holds Industrial Safety and Health Exhibitions and organises competitions for designs of industrial safety posters as part of the publicity campaign.
The Pressure Equipment Division of the Labour Department administers the Boilers and Pressure Receivers Ordinance and the Gas-holders Examination Ordinance to ensure the safe use and operation of all equipment covered by the ordinances. The division offers free technical advice to government departments, industrial undertakings. and other organisations which install pressure equipment. It also conducts examinations for the purpose of issuing certificates of competency for boiler operators.
The Occupational Health Division of the Labour Department safeguards and promotes the health of workers. Officers of this division frequently visit those factories which have special occupational health problems. Health education is given during visits and medical examination of workers is conducted when required. This division issues a number of pamphlets for doctors, employers and employees on the prevention of certain occupational diseases and other health hazards at work.
The Division also issues certificates of fitness for underground workers, licences to industrial undertakings for radioactive substances, permits for the conveyance of radioactive substances in Hong Kong, certificates of fitness for radiation workers and medical certificates for air-crew or air traffic control officers. It gives advice on occupational health aspects for such projects and processes as compressed air work, diving, chromeplating, dry battery manufacture, rubber industry, noise and other physical problems in industry. is also responsible for the medical examination of divers and all government officers who are required, in their course of duty, to enter into compressed air environment.

The Occupational Hygiene Unit of the Labour Department is responsible for promoting a healthy working environment. achieved by factory visits, environmental monitoring, biological monitoring and laboratory analyses of samples collected, evaluation of industrial hazards and setting up of standards for their control.
Monitoring work includes the measurement of the concentration of air-borne contaminant such as chromium, lead manganese, mercury; solvents, sulphur dioxide, silica and other dust; and the investigation of conditions of thermal comfort, ventilation, lighting and noise.
