Regional strategies for arresting land degradation.

Finite land resources and population pressure lead to changing land-use patterns which result in accelerated soil erosion, impaired productivity or loss of cultivable land. Devising strategies to improve land-use patterns in order to arrest further land degradation is imperative and urgent in a great part of the Asia and the Pacific Region. Such strategies include a number of measures which go from technological choices to macro-economic and sectoral policies. They should be based on a solid land resource data base and extensive awareness campaigns and training which would involve and mobilize decision-makers, trainers, extensionists and the rural population. Action to be taken at national and regional level including establishment of region-wide networking and FAO's support thereto will also be discussed.
