The НКМАО, MFA was set up after the ratification

of the Joint Declaration in 1985. Previously, it was a

unit under the Western European Department (in relation to

Britain) under the MFA. After 1985, the HKMAO was given

separate status to be responsible for matters relating to

the implementation of the Joint Declaration.
