NORTH KOREA

A: INDIVIDUALS

The aim is to be in a position to provide:

A) Basic, up to date, information on those holding senior posts in the North Korean hierarchy.

B) Some background information on individuals who are likely to rise to senior positions in advance of their doing so. Junior figures prominent in relations with

the UK.

C) Information on prominent Koreans living abroad with strong connections with the North, eg Chongnyon leaders.

The principal sources for such information are the Summary of World Broadcasts and the Foriegn Broadcast Information Service. This is supplemented by limited amounts of information from other published and government sources.

At present the following information from SWB is routinely carded: all new appointments (including ones to less senior positions, which are, in practice, very few), all visits abroad by North Korean officials, meetings North Korean officials have with significant foreign visitors, most appearances of the North Korean leadership and all those of Kim Il-song and Kim Chong-il. Information on other personalites, especially those in categories B and C above, is carded when appropriate.
