Draft letter from the Prime Minister

To:

David Bull Esq

Director, Amnesty International

99-119 Rosebery Avenue

LONDON EC12 4RE

Thank you for your letter of 16 April welcoming the Government's decision to abolish capital punishment for murder in the Caribbean Dependent Territories and to substitute a sentence of life imprisonment.

The Order in Council was approved on 16 April and

laid before Parliament on the same day. It will take effect on 10 May and will bring the law in the Caribbean Dependent Territories broadly into line with that in the United Kingdom. Bermuda, however, was not covered by the Order in Council, although we hope that the Government there will introduce and enact similar legislation.
