Mr. David Crystal

News Department

Foreign & Commonwealth office

Dear David,

We spoke yesterday about how we use the media summaries this office receives from Hong Kong.

As I explained, we do from time to time send summaries of reports, op-ed pieces and editorials that appear in Hong Kong newspapers to selected media here on a variety of subjects, in particular more recently on VMs and the Legco elections. This is basically to let journalists who have an interest in Hong Kong know how the media is reporting events and developments there.

As I mentioned we did send Hong Kong media reports, editorials and other comment pieces on the Legco election and on what was being said about Martin Lee's call on the Governor after the elections to the following:-

Rosemary Righter, The Times

Richard Davey, The Independent

Simon Scott-Plummer, Daily Telegraph

John Gittings, The Guardian

We also draw very heavily on these media summaries when briefing UK journalists, so that we can give them some idea of how the press in Hong Kong looks at various issues.

With best regards.

Yours sincerely,

Ranjit Peiris Press Officer
