4. Separately, we would like to talk to the Governor when he is
here about steps that can be taken to narrow the gap between
reporting on Hong Kong in the British media and coverage in Hong
Kong itself. I submitted the Governor's telno 2986 to the
Secretary of State, who recognises this problem and has asked
Lord Caithness on his return to assess what can be done.
Secretary of State's own suggestion is that the Hong Kong
Government office here could circulate digests of the Hong Kong
press to editors of British newspapers at times when Hong Kong
stories are prominent here in order to expose them to the more
balanced Hong Kong coverage. We think that this is a good idea
and I have already raised it with John Yaxley. There are a
number of other possible steps as well which it would be worth
discussing.
