The

memorandum of under
standing' for a new Hong Kong airport, signed on Tuesday by Prime Minister John Major and Chinese premier Li Peng, frees the way for construction of 10 linked projects totalling HK$97 000M (57461M) The mino randum guarantees that China will not interfere in any way with the construction or operation of these projects known collectively as the Airport Core Programme.
It also sets out guidelines on consultation needed between the Hong Kong government and China before possible future associated projects can start after Hong Kong censes to be a British colony in July 1997.
These are the 10 projects in the airport programme:
CHEK LAP KOK AIRPORT
Cost: HK$43 600M ($3354M). Finance: 39% HK government, 61% private sector for services, cargo, catering etc.
Description: Two runways built on 1276ha of partially reclaimed site. Terminal and handling for 80M passengers/year and 33Mt cargo. First phase includes one runway and facilities for 33M passengers/year. Description: (verall Ikm crussing including two bridges and viaduct between Lantau and Tsing Yi islands. Tsing Ma suspension bridge: 2km long with 1377m main span. Kap Shul Mun bridge: three span. 691m long with 440m main span. Viaduct over Ma Wan island. Struc- tures are all two level with six lane
