Thank you so much for finding time on a very busy day to see Peter Heap and myself last Thursday. It was invaluable to have your up to date comments on your discussions with the Chinese.
2.
You asked me at the end for my impressions of my visit. My thoughts were still jumbled so I set them out now.
3.
Firstly I was deeply impressed by the quality of the new buildings. The Exhibition Centre is outstanding in design, location and facilities. Secondly the new Cultural centres have filled a long neglected area. Thirdly the visual impact and design quality of new buildings like the Bank of China and Exchange Square now put Hong Kong in a class of its own. All this, including the lavish new hotels, must stimulate its tourist and service appeal.
4.
Secondly, increasing economic and transport integration with Guangdong and Shenzhen remains a key factor in the post-1997 relationship with Peking. The more these economies support and develop into an even stronger entity the less, despite inevitable jealousies, Peking will dare to be too destructive. The patient and demanding efforts of CLP and of Hopewell Holdings to forge links and joint projects, as well as those of the many Hong Kong investors and employers in China, must be the way forward.
