West Kowloon Reclamation

14. The West Kowloon Reclamation will provide 330 hectares

of land along the West Kowloon waterfront between Yau Ma

Tei and

Lai. Chi Kok.

It is an important development project identified in the Territorial Development Strategy providing land for various economic uses as well as to meet

the shortfall of open space in this area. Since it also

provides the transport corridor for Route 3, West Kowloon

Expressway, Western Harbour Crossing and the Airport Railway, it is also a key project required to support the

opening of the new airport. Apart from reclamation, this

project also includes the formation of new breakwaters and

seawalls, the reprovisioning of over 30 major waterfront

users including shipyards, dockyards, piers, wholesale markets and public cargo working areas.

15. The reclamation project is in the final stage of design and tender.

The first two major reclamation contracts have been awarded. The first drainage contract is

planned for. award in late 1991. Negotiations with major affected land users are being pursued.

West Kowloon Expressway

16. The West Kowloon Expressway is a 3.9 kilometre, dual three/four lane expressway linking the Tsing Yi section of Route 3 with the toll plaza of the Western Harbour Crossing. It also includes part of a primary distributor road. This transport link is essential for the opening of the new airport. It will be supported by improvements on

Lung Cheung and Ching Cheung Roads which will be carried

out in due course as part of the normal Public Works

Programme.
