Hong Kong gifts and premiums
stole the limelight at Dubai's
International Trade Fair for Gifts,
Toys and Novelties.
One of the highlights of the year's promo- tional activities was a Hong Kong business delegation to Mexico City and Monterrey, where product exhibitions featuring toys, garments and accessories, electronic products, watches and clocks and photographic equipment netted orders worth more than HK$60 million. Another central product display at the Salon Del Regalo in Mexico provided further expo- sure for Hong Kong manufacturers.
In the wake of economic reforms in Brazil, Hong Kong's consumer goods exports to the country continued to rise. A business group which visited Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in January, 1991 achieved on-the- spot orders worth HK$5.8 million. Particu- lar interest was shown in electronic items, toys and games, stationery and school sup- plies, cotton textiles, garments, handbags, gifts and premiums.
In the Middle East, promotional efforts were suspended with the outbreak of the Gulf War, but as the area returned to a more
Prior to the outbreak of hostilities in the Gulf, the Council participated in the first Middle East International Trade Fair for Gifts, Toys and Novelties and in the Gulf Information Technology Exhibition, both held in Dubai. The Hong Kong pavilion with the theme, "The Best of Hong Kong", was the largest at the gift fair and received more than 100 trade enquiries a day during the four-day event.
For the first time, the Council organised a delegation to the Watch, Clock, Jewellery and Equipment Fair in Turkey. Watches and clocks are Hong Kong's major expcrt to Turkey, enjoying a growth rate of 203% in 1990, and the high profile established at the fair helped local companies make fur- ther inroads into this new market.
Hong Kong's exports to India have been growing over the past few years and in 1990 increased by 9%. In addition to encourag- ing the expansion of general trade with India, the TDC has placed emphasis on the supply of components to the country's rapidly expanding electronics industry."To this end, the TDC organised a delegation in conjunction with the Indian Chamber of Commerce to the Electronics India Fair held in New Delhi.
Although the economies of many African countries are in recession and show little signs of improvement, Hong Kong's total exports to the region have picked up, reg istering a 23% increase in 1990. The TDC continued to monitor the major African markets and during the year a business group visited the Canary Islands, Cameroon, the Ivory Coast and Kenya.
