important trade event in Latin America, held in Panama City in March, 1991. Access to Latin American countries can be expedited through the Colon Free Zone and, as a result, Panama plays a pivotal role in trade with the region. Hong Kong's total exports to Panama rose by 20% in 1990.

Mexico is the most promising new market in Latin America for Hong Kong exporters and two-way trade is rising steadily. Last year, trade totalled HK$2.7 billion, repre- senting an expansion of 15% over 1989.

In view of this promising trade accelera- tion between Hong Kong and Central and South America, the TDC appointed a consultant in Mexico in April, 1990 to strengthen business services, provide market intelligence to Hong Kong com- panies and assist the TDC with formulat- ng strategies and designing promotional

rogrammes.
