CHINA: REGAINING MOMENTUM
Business with China, Hong Kong's largest trading partner, began to regain its momentum in 1990 and the TDC took the initiative in organising projects designed to both develop the consumer market and stimulate further co-operation in manufacturing.
During the year, the Council was involved in 34 projects in China, with particular emphasis on the Pearl River Delta area, where Hong Kong's trading and manu- facturing activities are concentrated.
In July, a seminar entitled "Hong Kong- Guangdong - A Successful Business Part- nership" was held in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, with the aim of creating closer
economic links between Hong Kong and
the province of Guangdong. To coincide with the seminar, which attracted more than 1,000 people, TDC Chairman Baron-
ess Dunn led a Hong Kong delegation to
Guangzhou, where members were received
by the Governor of Guangdong, Mr Ye

Xuan Ping and the Mayor of Guangzhou, Mr Li Zi Liu. The warm reception it received mphasised the importance of the growing relationship between the territory and Southern China.
Following the announcement of an ambitious development programme for Pudong in Shanghai, which was first presented by Shanghai Mayor, Mr Zhu Rongji, to the Hong Kong business sector in June 1990, when he visited the territory, the Council extended its promotional reach to include the area of the Yangtzekiang Delta. For the first time, a Hong Kong-China joint venture product promotion was held at the Shanghai No. 1 Department Store. More than 50 counters featuring Hong Kong joint venture brand- name products attracted considerable consumer and wholesale/retail buyer interest. At the same time, a Hong Kong Economic Mission to Shanghai led by Baroness Dunn held trade co-operation discussions with Shanghai officials. Members included the Hon. Stephen Cheong, Managing Director of Lee Wah Weaving Fty. Ltd.; Sir Quo-wei Lee, Chairman of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Ltd.; Mr Wong Po-yan, Chairman & Managing Director of United Overseas Enterprises Ltd.; Dr Philip Wong, Managing Director of Tai Cheng International (Holdings) Ltd.; Mr William Fung, Group Managing Director of Li & Fung Ltd.; Mr Herbert Liang, Chairman of the Wider Enterprises Ltd. and Mr Herman Hu, Executive Director of Ryoden (Holdings) Ltd.
