The main thrust of the TDC's activity in Taiwan was aimed at reinforcing the upmarket image of Hong Kong products amongst the consumer public. Following the success of the store promotion held at the Pacific Sogo Department Store in Taipei the previous year, a second event was mounted in October 1990 with special emphasis on Hong Kong brand names. Individual sales counters were set up and products from commercial firms were sold on a consignment basis. Four fashion shows were also staged generating considerable positive publicity from the local press and fashion magazines. In another promotion held in December at the President Depart- ment Store in Kaohsiung, toys and food- stuffs were the main products on display.

Buyers from leading department stores in Taiwan were also invited to visit Hong Kong during the year to meet local manu- facturers and suppliers and learn more about the range and quality of Hong Kong con- sumer products. Among those who came to the territory were buyers from Pacific Sogo,

Hong Kong's participation in major con- sumer trade fairs in Taipei particularly highlighted brand-name products. Exhi bitions in which the Council organised Hong Kong participation included the Taipei International Footwear & Leather Goods Show, Taipei International Hard ware, Houseware & Building Materials Show, Taipei International Jewellery & Timepiece Show, Taipei International Toy Show and Taipei Gift & Stationery Spring Show.

REPUBLIC OF KOREA

The centrepiece of the TDC's campaign in South Korea was a product promotion with the Hyundai Department Store in Seoul held in April 1990. This was organ- ised in conjunction with the visit of an economic mission headed by the Council's Chairman, Baroness Dunn, and including Dr. H. Sohmen, Chairman of Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and M Jack So, Executive Director of the Hon Kong Trade Development Council.
