students who have studied in Japan has reached approximately 4,700, including 150 students accepted under the Japanese Govern- ment Scholarship Scheme. These students play an important role in strengthening relations between Hong Kong and Japan in many
areas.
On the vocational side, the Japanese Technical Cooperation Project for the development of precision sheet metal processing technology has been carried out smoothly and successfully since
its inauguration in 1989.
In other areas of the assistance programme, for students
pursuing Japanese Studies courses in Hong Kong, the Japanese Government, under its cultural grant programme, provided tertiary educational institutions, namely the Hong Kong University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, with audio-visual equipment, educational materials and technical books.

In addition to this direct Government involvement, the Japan World Exposition Fund (JEC Fund) has provided assistance to five institutions in Hong Kong since 1985, including the University of Hong Kong in that year, the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1988, the Hong Kong Polytechnic in 1989, the Baptist College of hong Kong in 1990, and the City Polytechnic in 1991.
