I would like on your behalf to congratulate Smith Newcourt for
having this idea and for carrying it through so successfully.
is clear to me that today is going to be a substantial success
because of the way in which you have managed to assemble such a
star list of speakers. And how have you managed to do that? Well
clearly your timing has been exactly right.
I will not steal the thunder of those who are going to speak with
greater experience than I have about Hong Kong and its financial
future. I would just like to say this, something which is known
I expect to everyone here. Of all the places that I visit as
Foreign Secretary I think Hong Kong is the most exciting and I was
struck again two weeks ago when I was there by the sheer scale of
the continuing economic miracle there 6 million people, the 11th
-
largest trading nation in the world, a huge international
financial centre and a long term GDP growth rate of 7 percent a
year.
