I write to you in a commercial capacity rather than as a Member of Parliament. I am on the Board of Smith New Court which is one of the major firms of stockbrokers operating worldwide. It is, in fact, the largest market maker in British equities. Smith New Court have a very substantial interest and activity in Hong Kong and since I left the Cabinet I have been involved in a whole range of visits and talks there.
Earlier in the year, I consulted the Governor, Baroness Dunn and others upon whether they considered it would be to the advantage of Hong Kong if, in the autumn, we tried to organise a conference for major investment institutions from throughout the world to discuss the long term prospects for commerce and business in Hong Kong. The Governor, Baroness Dunn and other leading business members of the community to whom we spoke all said they would very much welcome such a conference being held, particularly if we could succeed getting to that conference a major speaker speaking from the Chinese viewpoint.
They all recommended that the ideal person to obtain would be Mr Lu Ping, Director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of the State Council, who is the leading Chinese personality involved in all of the developments taking place in the surrounding territories.
I am pleased to say that he has accepted our invitation to be a major speaker at the conference. Amongst the other speakers will be Baroness Dunn, one of the major Hong Kong banks, Adrian Swire, and Simon Murray of Hutchison
International.
