As regards a public enquiry, I am sure you will have seen the statement released by the Hong Kong Government on 31 July 1991. This indicated that the Government did not intend at that stage to appoint a committee of enquiry. However the possibility of a wider enquiry was not ruled out if at some later date investigations under way across the world revealed matters requiring further investigation in Hong Kong.
I share with you the hope that a satisfactory solution is reached soon as regards the Bank's future. As you will know there are some encouraging signs that the Hong Kong Chinese Bank (HKB) might be prepared to take over BCC (HK) if an agreement can be reached with all parties involved.
