11. These dual requirements lead to the conclusion that a CVS Group together with an LPD should be in place by early June 1997 at the

latest.

Land

12. The residual force, once the third battalion has withdrawn, will

probably be centred on an unaccompanied battalion group. It will be supported by suitable logistic assets both to maintain the residual force and to continue the task of stores and equipment disposal. A limited engineer capability should also remain until the end for contingency tasks associated with MACP and MACM. It is considered that an enhanced Field Troop would be adequate.

13. It is also of note that the battalion group will be the only

source of readily available manpower and as such will carry out many

tasks of a routine and mundane nature for the Garrison, including

guard duties. As the Defence Estate is handed over, the necessity for

manpower should decrease, and the land

land element can gradually be

reduced. It is not possible at this early date to estimate whether, for example, a force as small as a company group would be sufficient

in the final days; or whether in view of the routine tasks mentioned

earlier a full battalion will be required.

As stated in Part Three of this Review, the RHKAAF is unlikely

to have the capacity to provide the necessary airlift for the
