presence, two infantry battalions with supporting land elements and an air element of sufficient size to support the Garrison.

c. It is assumed that a residual military presence (for administrative clearance purposes) will be unacceptable after 30

June 1997.

3.

LEP/LEC. It is assumed that there will be very few, if any LEP or LEC serving with the British Forces during the final 6 months. Those who have not already distanced themselves will probably be preparing for departure from

The the Garrison.

Garrison must

therefore be capable of carrying out all its functions without local

manpower.

4.

Unaccompanied Service. The Garrison will be unaccompanied except perhaps for some senior posts where representational aspects will be important. No dependants will therefore be available for employment.

5. UK Presence. Finally, it is assumed that in order to satisfy the political imperatives to retain a symbol of sovereignty to the end, it would be more appropriate for the Garrison in its final form to include a substantial UK military contingent rather than be totally

Gurkhas.

Tasks

6.

The 3 Services will be involved in the following tasks:

a.

Handover of Estate. Handover of the remaining Defence
