My colleague Lee Lap Sun from the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office told me today that the Minister at the Chinese Embassy made a point of speaking to him in the margins of a tourism seminar held in Hokkaido over the weekend. Tang Jiaxuan had made three points:

a)

Although there were current disagreements over the airport project, China remained fully committed to the future prosperity and stability of Hong Kong.

b) It had been a shrewd move to engage the LDP politician Hata to run the Japan/Hong Kong Parliamentary Group: the Chinese Embassy had also marked him down as a rising star.

c) He hoped that relations between HKETO and the Chinese Embassy could improve and that Lee would be able to attend Embassy functions in the future.

2. Lee told me that he has already passed this on to the Hong Kong Government on his own channels, and in particular to seek instructions on c) above. You, however, may also be interested.

Yours Serenach
