The Post reported that leading local legal experts yesterday urged the Government to review the disputed Summary offences Ordinance following the ruling.
In an editorial, the Post said that the judiciary had reaffirmed its independence and inspired public confidence in the legal system by quashing the conviction. The verdict delivered by Sir T.L. demonstrated that the judiciary would not tolerate abuse of the process by the executive branch.
CRIME
Both papers accorded good coverage to news stories related to fight crime.
In an inside-page lead, SCMP reported that S for S Alistair Asprey expressed disappointment that the Triad Renunciation Scheme had not netted more triads. HKS quoted Mr Asprey as noting that the Government had no plans to reactivate the suspended scheme, and gang members had up until April to sever their links with the underworld.
The Standard ceported that CP Li Kwan-ha called on HK people Lo help in the long, hard battle against crime.
GOVERNOR
SCMP said that the Governor, Sir David Wilson, was likely to meet Chinese Premier Li Peng in Peking next week even though he had /curtailed his trip to China because of concerns over the war in
the Gulf. When Sir David would embark on the diplomatic mission to the Chinese capital on Monday, Fanny Wong and Andy Ho in the Post looked at what lied ahead for the Governor in Peking.

Both papers gave good pictorial coverage to the opening of a playground for Vietnamese in Hei Ling Chau.
COMMENTARIES.
HKS devoted extensive coverage to a debate on capital punishment with Legco member David Cheng saying that tough punishment deterred crime while his colleague Martin Barrow that the penalty was at odds with the right of life.
Commenting on the likely industrial action to be taken by one Government teachers' union for a better deal, the Post said that the teachers should make a meaningful gesture by rejecting any threat of industrial action when negotiations with the ED resumed after the weekend.
