Concerning British Passports for Hong Kong Chinese.
I have discussed this subject with Sir Giles Shaw (my home is in his constituency) and I hope to meet Mr Merlyn Rees (the business is in his constituency).
I write to you in support of the Government's policy which correctly (in my view) recognises the economic importance to the United Kingdom of retaining in Hong Kong leaders of the business community.
The remarkable growth in the wealth of the Pacific Region offers many opportunities to British business for profit and job creation in UK.
Hong Kong is frequently central to negotiations with buyers in the region, viz, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and others.
Enclosed is a print-cut of this Company's sales to customers in Hong Kong. £750,000 of our product represents value added in UK/EEC of 90% to external **raw material, a significant part of value added is wages paid in UK. I
believe this Company to be typical of many medium sized businesses in UK (and EEC) with good prospects in Hong Kong and the Region.
My
My agent in Hong Kong, Mr Spencer Chan, is indispensable to sales procure- ment. He works also for us with contacts in Japan, Taiwan and Korea. In January 89 we were in Beijing together! I am seeking a British Passport for Mr Chan. Politicians of both parties would deny the Passport. Kaufmann argues from distaste of favouring the rich. Mr Budgen argues from the effect in Britain of any immigration; and what to say to elderly Sikhs in Wolverhampton.
