Arms Sales to Argentina
12. We want assurances that Italy will continue to withhold the sale of significant military items to Argentina and, in particular, not allow Italian firms to become involved in the proposed major refit of the Argentine aircraft carrier "25 de Mayo". (The Secretary of State has written to
De Michelis about this; it could also be raised with
Andreotti, who knows the background and was helpful when
Foreign Minister.)
Iran/Iraq/Libya
13. The Italians will lead on discussions of Middle East.
We should refer to their relations with Iran and Libya.
Hong Kong
14. Italian Ministers are considering whether to grant long-term visas to Hong Kong citizens working for Italian companies. We should encourage such confidence-building
measures.
South Africa
15. We should probe Italian thinking on future EC policy. We could refer to recent Dutch proposals.
State Visit
16. We should show we attach importance to President
Cossiga's State Visit 23-26 October.
Drugs
17. Co-operation with Italy is good and the Secretary of
State is to sign with De Michelis, at the Palazzochigi, a
bilateral agreement with Italy concerning the restraint and
confiscation of the proceeds of all crime. The brief includes points-to-make for the signing ceremony. We can also thank the Italians for their support at the World
Ministerial Summit on Drugs in London, including Gava's
