HONG KONG: INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT
The Prime Minister may like to raise with Mr Hawke what further
assistance Australia can offer to maintain confidence in Hong Kong,
especially in following our lead in introducing measures which will
encourage people to remain in Hong Kong.
Mr Maude during his recent visit to Hong Kong outlined what other
countries were already doing including the flexibility that already
exists under Australian immigration rules to allow those granted
residence status to travel widely during the first three years after
their arrival, and in some cases to live outside Australia without
jeopardising this status.
Mr Hawke will be aware that we have asked the Australians to
consider giving some Hong Kong poeple the assurance of the right of
abode in Australia without them having to leave Hong Kong and indeed
Australian firms in Hong Kong have made similar representations.
The impression from officials in Canberra is that Australia are
unlikely to move as far as we would wish on this aspect but Mr Hawke
may be sympathetic.
