Sir Nicholas reported a recent meeting with Matathir when he was in Malaysia, when Matathir said that he was only too willing to take any Hong Kong Chinese who were wanting a home, and had asked that Sir Nicholas convey this message for him to the Government.
The Lord President commented that, on the face of it, he found this a slightly surprising suggestion from Matathir given the problems of the Chinese population in Malaysia. He added that he considers the conversation does show clearly that Sir Nicholas still regards himself as being active and playing a useful role in that part of the world.
