and exit after 1997
In accordance with the provisións of the Sino-British Joint Declaration and the Basic law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, (I) now attempt to examine the issue of entry and exit of the Hong Kong residents in future, in the form of a set of questions and
answers.
Q:
A:
Do Hong Kong residents have the freedom of entry and exit in the future?
Section 14 of Annex 1 of the Sino-British Joint Declaration reads, "Unless restrained by law, holders of valid travel documents shall be free to leave the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region without special authorization." this is reproduced in the latter part of Article 31 of the Basic Law, preceded by the line: "They shall have the freedom to travel and the freedom of entry and exit."

---The above provisions guarantee the freedom ̈ of --- entry and exit for Hong Kong residents Certainly this freedom of
entry and exit does not mean that all the immigration control Will be removed. It is still necessary to check the travel documents of people travelling to and from the territory The prerequisite for the freedom of entry and exit is to have a
have a valid travel document, and the person concerned is not involved in any legal problem which warrants his being barred from entering of leaving the
the territory. This is a common regulation all over the world.
