ALLOCATION OF CALL SIGNS

1. Your minute of 17 July to Mr Alexander refers.

As you are fully aware of the disruption that the proposed changes in call signs will cause to Pitcairn I do not feel I need to press this point.

However if the change must be made could we not give the Pitcairn Island Radio enthusiasts a little sweetner by promising to pay for the reprinting of their QSL cards. cards are exchanged or collected by amateur operators to confirm radio contacts. VR 6 is regarded among the international ham fraternity as a rare and highly collectable call sign hence the demand for Pitcairn cards. The islanders have the cards printed in New Zealand and one individual has a stock of over 10,000 cards in hand. Incomes on Pitcairn are limited by our standards and reprinting would be an expense islanders could ill afford.

4. I note from last year's file that the DTI correspondence with the Pitcairn Island Commissioner Mr Garth Harraway adequate notice for any change (4-5 years) would be insisted upon.(Copy of correspondence attached.)
