In October 1989, the Government of Hong Kong announced its decision to develop a new international airport at Chek Lap Kok to replace the existing Kai Tak airport.

The Airport Core Projects (ACP) encompass the airport and nine other major ground transportation and infrastructure projects.

All projects are keyed to opening the first of two runways to commercial operation by early 1997.

PRELIMINARY CORE PROJECT SUMMARIES

Ο

CHEK LAP KOK AIRPORT PROJECT

1000 hectare site requires reclamation of some 650 hectares, levelling the island of Chek Lap Kok (90 million cu meters rock excavation) and placing some 130 million cu meters of fill. Two 3700 m runways at a separation of 1350 m or 1525 m. Runway separation, terminal and groundside configurations still under study.

Ultimate capacity: 80 million passengers and 4.4 million tonnes of cargo annually, operating 24 hours a day.

Status: Master planning and preliminary design underway. Consultants: Greiner/Maunsell. Financial Advisors: Wardley Capital Ltd.

TUNG CHUNG DEVELOPMENT - PHASE I

Grassroots community infrastructure for 20,000 residents on 100 hectare site in the vicinity of the airport.

In later phases, growing to 60,000 by year 2001, 120,000 by year 2006, and 200,000 by year 2011.

Status: Development study and preliminary design. Consultants: Mott MacDonald Hong Kong Ltd.

NORTH LANTAU EXPRESSWAY

13.5 km of dual 3-lane expressway and three interchanges on reclamation along the north coast of Lantau Island, connecting the CLK airport with the major bridge crossing to Tsing Yi and the mainland.

Integrated transport corridor to include the expressway, twin-track high speed railway, and a 12.8 m wide utility reserve.

Status: Detailed design underway. Consultants: Mott MacDonald Hong Kong Ltd.

LANTAU FIXED CROSSING

Fixed link providing dual 3-lane expressway and twin-track high speed railway crossings between Lantau Island and Tsing Yi. Two suspension bridges linked by a viaduct crossing of Ma Wan Island, totalling 5.5 km in length.

On 5 October 1990, the Government announced its decision to proceed itself with design and construction rather than inviting build-operate-transfer (BOT) franchise tenders.

Tsing Ma Bridge: 1377 m main span, 2032 m overall (will be third longest in the world when completed). Kap Shui Mun Bridge: 441 m main span, 691 m overall.

Cross section: dual 3-lane expressway atop twin-track high speed railway and emergency roadways within enclosed deck section.
