WWF's concern at the potential environmental impact of the airport project is appreciated by Government. Their comments are being incorporated into the environmental impact study being carried out by the airport Master Plan Study consultants. They have asked to participate in the management of the Environmental Impact Assessment studies. It is not usual practice to include a private body in the studies management group itself, but arrangements can be made to inform and consult the WWF during the process of the study.

meeting was held with the Green Lantau Association on 23 May 1990. While Government representatives were able to describe the environmental studies being undertaken as part of the airport planning process, they were not able to deal with the main concern of the Association (namely the effect of any westward extension of the airport), because of uncertainty as to whether and to what extent such a change might be required. Until the airport Master Plan is completed, it will be impossible to adequately address the concerns raised by the Green Lantau Association.
Options Available and the Consequences

Authorisation of whole without modifications and
The option of de-gazetting any areas that are found not to be required for airport construction is not provided for in the Foreshore & Seabed (Reclamations) Ordinance. Section 10 of the Ordinance simply provides for the complete extinguishment of all public and private rights over the area of foreshore and seabed. Subsequent re-instatement of rights was not envisaged or allowed for under the Ordinance.
Option (b) - Decline to authorise

If the Governor in Council declines to authorise the whole reclamation project this would effectively prevent the development of an airport at Chek Lap Kok.
